Vortrag auf der Konferenz „What is Media?“, die von 14. bis 16. April 2016 an der School of Journalism and Communication der University of Oregon in Portland stattfand. Mit im Gepäck: Michel Foucault und Fack ju Göhte 1.
Unter dem Titel „Movies as Regimes of Understanding the World: A Power Oriented Research Approach“ war mein Vortrag auf der Konferenz „What is Media?“ an der University of Oregon in Portland der Frage gewidmet, wie der Inhalt von Spielfilmen einer sozialwissenschaftlichen, machtorientierten Analyse zugänglich gemacht werden kann. Der Vorschlag: durch das Heranziehen der diskurstheoretischen Überlegungen des französischen Soziologen Michel Foucault. Veranschaulicht wurde dieses innovative theoretische und methodische Vorgehen am Beispiel des deutschen Blockbusters Fack ju Göhte 1, der, so das zentrale Ergebnis, einen Integrationsdiskurs bedient und an erster Stelle Werbung macht für die Institution Schule sowie für den Lehrerberuf.
Der Abstract des Vortrags:
The paper has a cinematic sociological purpose and aims to reveal the construction of social reality across the medium film. On the one hand, movies are supposed to be the result of hierarchies and constraints. On the other hand, they have a strong influence on the world’s representation and must be considered as meaningful myths, which more and more replace national epics in modern societies (also due to the multiple ways of exploitation outside the cinema). Therefore, the paper argues for combining the classic film analysis tools with the discourse theory of Michel Foucault, which starts from a socially shaped regime of understanding the world. In this spirit, using Foucault’s discursive formations (objects, modalities, concepts, strategies) as a research framework to examine audiovisual media content does not only correspond to social sciences’ quality criteria. It furthermore offers connectivity to critical approaches in the field of media and communication studies.
